Chapter Fourteen

Paedon

“Are you sure I didn’t make too many?” I asked Hunter as I bounced on my toes, focused on the kitschy wall clock my alpha had gifted me with for my grand opening. It came from an actual diner, and he’d found it at an online auction. So cute, with real neon.

There were dozens of bacon and cheese buns ready, fresh out of the oven for the morning workers who were already lined up outside and had been for ten minutes. Hunter had the idea to post the to-go menu in the window and more flyers at the feed store, the hardware store, and even the bulletin board at the park. No wonder he had such a successful business. I’d also hired two servers. Geralt’s sons were twins in their late teens who had no experience but a great attitude. Everything was working out, and it was kind of freaking me out how smoothly this was flowing.

New openings were supposed to be fumbles and accidents and all-around mayhem, or so I’d read, but I had a feeling this opening wouldn’t be that way. I didn’t know why I was so certain, or why that didn’t stop my mind from reeling about the what-ifs.

“I’m sure. In fact, look at that line, Possum. You might not have enough.”

He had taken to calling me Possum over the past week. I didn’t fuss. Not one bit. It was very Aussie of him to call me that, and I loved his pet name for me.

“Is everyone ready?” I asked, going to the front door. My stomach was a mess and my heart was beating faster than a butterfly’s wings in my belly. The servers wore custom-made aprons, courtesy of their dad. “Here we go.”

I opened the door to the breakfast rush. I honestly thought when I moved here that this would all be a slow burn. That my customer base would grow over time and that was fine with me, but this?

The rush for the quick breakfast bags was over in less than thirty minutes. Scott bagged food while Trevor made travel cups of coffee and Hunter rang them all up. We would have the bags made up ahead from now on to save time, as had been the original idea. We just weren’t sure what people would want. I greeted the sit-down customers and showed them to booths and took their orders.

I would do whatever I needed to during this rush if it lasted.

“They’re all gone. I had turn away about ten people, although we offered to make fresh for them; they didn’t have time to wait. Maybe another dozen or so premades would be good,” Scott said after the crowd was gone. I was upset that we hadn’t been able to fill all the orders, but mistakes were part of the journey. Tomorrow, I would make two dozen extra just to be on the safe side.

The rest of the day was a blur. Most of the customers ordered a mix of American and Aussie dishes, liking the familiar and wanting to try something new as well.
